Education for children with special needs: Experience of Israel

Gifted children, who constitute 3% of the total number of basic school students and took special exams, participate in various development programs – from special schools to extracurricular sessions at a regular school. The classrooms for gifted children are distinct by special level of students and lessons, which are focused not only on instilling general knowledge and understanding but also practical application of the obtained skills in learning other disciplines. The students of these classes learn to think independently and absorb new material.

Children lagging behind in physical or intellectual development or those who face difficulties in studying, are placed in special schools depending on the nature of their illness. At these schools they are instilled skills, required for integration into the life of their communities and gaining a profession.

Some children are at special institutions, while others attend regular schools, where they can enroll in specific groups or attend extracurricular sessions with the rest of the class. The responsibility for these children is delegated to the health workers, psychologists, social workers, and experts on special education as well as the family and various support groups. The committee established according to the law and appointed by the minister of education, will determine whether the children with physical or intellectual impairments are fit for education based on special programs and at special institutions. This training is offered free-of-charge at the age 3 to 21.

Israeli patent:«walking aids for paralyzed children

Debbi Elnatan from Israel, whose son Rotem has cerebral paralysis, invented a device dubbed Upsee, which enables paralyzed children to move with the help of an adult, without a wheelchair. Upsee is fit for children aged 3-8 Invention by Debbi Elnatan, a musical psychotherapist by background, looks like a vest with belts, which is put on a child and attached to the back of an adult, holding up the child vertically. Special sandals enable the adult and the child to walk together, whereas both keep their hands free.

When my son was 2-years-old, doctors told me that he does not realize what legs are and does not feel them, said Elnatan. Debbie acknowledged that it was because of pain and despair she conceived the idea of Upsee.
