December 3 – International Day of Persons with Disabilities

On December 2, 2015, a festival dedicated to the International Day of the Persons with Disabilities was held in Tashkent. The festival became an important chain in the series of events dedicated to focusing the attention to the problems of the persons with disabilities and creating equal opportunities for everyone.

International Day of the Persons with Disabilities is one of the opportunities to engage the attention of the public to the need to create an inclusive society. This day was instituted according to the Resolution of the UN General Assembly in 1992 and annually celebrated on December 3 across the world.

This year a concert programme along with a photo exhibition was held involving the youth in Uzbekistan involving persons with special needs. The photographs of women with disabilities presented at the exhibition is quiet but expressive story of life of the people, who live bright and full-fledged lives despite their special needs. The guests also could learn about the success stories of social companies, which were represented in the exhibition. Furthermore, large-scale media campaign, including broadcasting of videos on national television, enabled to introduce the public, including the youth, to the results obtained in the country in the years of independence with the focus on social protection of the persons with disabilities. Holding numerous events nationwide dedicated to the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an opportunity to draw attention to the problems of the persons with disabilities, protection of their dignity, rights and welfare, and focus the attention of the society to the advantages, which it receives from involvement of women and men with disabilities in political, social, economic, and cultural life.

The UNDP, Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Population of Uzbekistan, and the Advisory Board of NGOs of the People with disabilities with NANNOUz acted as organizers of this specific activity.
